Tosca was as lovely this time as it has been the others I have seen it. I must admit this opera is one of my favourites; a tragedy, of course (it is rather difficult to find an opera that is not a tragedy, although I have no complaints on that topic), but I think there is a certain something to be admired in tragic operas. Puccini is perhaps my favourite composer when it comes to Operas, so it really ought to be no surprise I so enjoy the piece.

In Bohème the characters were struggling against illness, and against the inevitability of death, while in Tosca they struggled against themselves, and others. Nothing seems direct or honest, and everything is coloured with doubt and jealousy, betrayal and lies. Even when things come clear, it is already far too late for anything happy to come from the story. I think there is a certain power in that kind of tale. Scarpia and Tosco and Mario - they all seem very real to me.

In short, I did very much enjoy this evening's outing. Did anyone else happen to see the opera?
